T2 Amphibious Tank

If you have been keeping up with the development diaries, you may notice that this is definitely not the first time we are visting this unit. And its likely not the last time either. This started with a miscommunication between the developers, where we accidentally ended up with a design for a hover tank, which you can see below.

When we needed one that would go along the seabed so the result of that was a quickly thrown together design that in hindisght was not the most inspired being a little bit too simple. Marlo had a good go at it, but since the idea wasnt that great the model was pretty hard for him to get right. We parked it for a while at this stage to see what might come up later. You can see both the sketch and his models with some markups below.

And in the end something did come up. Its the image right at the top of this post! The above model was actually just a random marlo model. He seems to be good at those, with his models bringing new ideas to the table quite a lot recently, which is all in all rather great. And now we are planning to appropriate the model into the new t2 hover tank. Being an amphibious unit, it needs to be distinctive in its apparent function, which might be a bit of a challenge. Its pop-up elements should help with that.

You can see just how much has changed, but perhaps also a couple of similarities. Is this the last time we will be visiting this unit? Not likely. We will be sure to keep you updated. But so far this does seem to be one of the more convoluted development cycles for our units. Shows just how much time goes into each unit, and the kinds of adventures we go on during their development.

And thats it for now! If you want to see top secret stuff, join the discord server where you can chat to the devs, ask questions, spy on the process and get all the exclusive goodies and more! Also feel free to leave feedback either on the forum thread or in the discord. Remember, feedback is very important!

Lastly, we are always looking for more contributors, so if you are interested in creating things, whether thats code, 2d art, models, music or anything else, do get in touch! We also provide all the resources and guidance needed, so don’t worry if you think you are missing any skills, we will be glad to see you!

Nomads Patch V88

Hello everyone,
Today is the release day for Nomads V 88
This patch is the last patch of this year, bringing the total number of nomads patches released in 2019 to 14!
Of those, 6 were major patches, and 8 were minor patches, and together thats more than one patch per month!
We believe that its very important to keep the mod updated frequently so you guys get to see all the latest features without delay, and all your help and support has been absolutely necessary to make this happen.

But if you would like to see just as much progress next year, then you need to get involved too! Mods don’t make themselves you know! And we need you (yes, you!) more than ever! There is every kind of work that needs doing, so dont worry if you think you dont have coding skills, because every skill is needed.

To help out with the mods development, as well as just keeping up to date or even complaining, head here:

You can play the newest version right now by clicking the nomads featured mod from the list on the side of the client, enjoy!

Changes for this version:

New T1 Air scout model:

If you have been keeping up with the development diaries, you may have seen some hints of the T1 air scout already, and now its time to see the finished thing in game!

This little guy doesnt have any particular special abilities, but we still made it the best that it could be! When landing, it folds its engines inwards like so:

New Unit Icons:

Amazing Ninrai has been at it again, this time fixing a long term pain involving outdated unit icons! We keep working on new models, but we havent had anyone to keep the icons matching. Now we do! And they are indeed very lovely:

This is a never ending task though since we keep cranking out new stuff, so the T1 air scout doesnt have its icon just yet, but it will be done soon! We promise!

Intel Probe:

The intel probe got a quality of life pass this patch, with it now displaying the range of all the intels that it provides, so you arent confused anymore about where those are coming from. Additionally, if you have the capacitor upgrade on your ACU you can temporarily boost the radius of the probe with it for even more spying!

There is much more in this patch than just that so to see all the changes, and to leave your much-needed feedback, you can check out the accompanying forum post here: http://forums.faforever.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=14315&p=178296#p178296

Nomads Dev Diaries #4

Hello!

This week we will be showing some work on the next few unit concepts we are working on, and the thoughts behind them.

As always, this content you can spy ahead in the Nomads Development Discord, so if you want to get the exclusive info before everyone else, chat to the devs, ask questions or even contribute, you can do that here.

T3 Air scout

Last week we talked a little about the T1 air scout, and this week the image above shows the T3 air scout. Since the units are fairly similar in concept, we wanted them to have some shared visual features as well. This sketch explores the various possible shapes, where we aimed to make a unit that “feels” fast. This is very much a work in progress, and the major shapes are being explored here, with details to come later. Which version do you like the most? Which one the least?

T2 Hover Tank

Continuing with unit designs, this is the future t2 hover tank. This one has visuals similar to the T1 lab, and in the Nomads lore it is also an early unit that was developed before the events of the Nomads campaign. Its a little more sleek looking than other nomads stuff, and looking like it could move a little faster. It incorporates some design hints from cars and similar vehicles to try and give it that look.

T1 Land Scout

This one is interesting, because there is already a model that has been lieing around for quite a while, in fact, its the very first model for the new nomads units. The ACU head was inspired by the scout. You can check it out here:

And here are some sketches showing a variation on the unit:

Its been a while since the first model and so it has been updated a little. However, its still not done yet, and now we are thinking of ways to combine the two ideas together, to make an even better unit. What do you like more, the new scout or the old scout model?

Nomads Dev Diaries #2

Hello everyone!

So, last week was the release of a nomads patch, so we skipped the dev diary. Likely this is what will happen in the future as well. If there is a nomads release that week, then no diary. Otherwise, we might be doing one of these every friday, so you have something to look forward to!

As usual we are posting content that you can get sneaks of in the Nomads Development Discord, so join that to get the news in advance!

Sketches

So, this dev diary just after a release, and we thought it would be good to start off with a few sketches, so you can better see what might be going on in our heads as we work on the unit models. The picture above is just something that looks nice. Its not of any particular unit, but just of something Nomads-looking. A lot of these are made to explore ideas, and some of these might make it into various units.

The above sketch was actually one of six, seen below. These were exploring various carrier-like units, and the nicest one was drawn larger. Nomads arent going to have a space aircraft carrier, but the idea for their navy is spacecraft converted into ships, so the above image might be adapted into a completed unit one day.

Lastly, its always nice to capture the feeling of the faction, so making art pieces like the one below help out with this. Maybe you can see some potential units in the picture?

Unit Renames

This is special because its all thanks to samuel.hxs, who has just made his first contributions to the nomads repo, so well done on that!
Pretty straightfward, we have been taking a look at the various names of the nomads units and thought that they might use a bit of a facelift. To start off with, we are renaming the T1 tank destroyer from Assassin to Marksman, and the T1 tank from Orbis to Eclipse. We thought these show a bit more character to the units, while also being less obscure. Also, you (yes you!) can help out as well. The list of unit names is still incomplete so if you have some suggestions, opinions or otherwise it would be very helpful if you let them be known to the dev team.

And thats all for now! If you want to see top secret stuff, join the discord server where you can chat to the devs, ask questions, spy on the process and get all the exclusive goodies and more! Nomads Release V86

Hello everyone, today is the release day for Nomads V 86
This patch contains 81 commits, since the last minor patch 85, and 114 commits since the last major patch of V83 which we announced just a couple of months ago!
Altogether, this means that the nomads mod is twice as active by commit number as any other official faf project in 2019! Undieing gratitude goes out to everyone who made this possible!

You can play the newest version right now by clicking the nomads featured mod from the list on the side of the client, enjoy!

You can talk to us, see what we do, get help with modding supcom from the resident experts and much more on the Nomads discord server.

Highlight for this release:

The T4 transport has been replaced with a brand new model! We’ve put it next some other units so you can appreciate how huge it is.

Aside from just visual improvements however, we have also reworked all its code from the ground up, making it much, much easier to use! If you have played earlier versions of Nomads before, you may remember it had a tendency to fly off instead of picking up units, which has been much improved, allowing you to pick up and drop things off anywhere you please!

As we mentioned in our development diary last week, we worked out how to fix the issues with transport slots, and as a result the T4 transport can carry a lot more lower tech units than before! Additionally, its special transport slot now doesnt interfere with the others, letting it carry both a beamer (or any ship!) and a whole army at the same time!

There is much more in this patch than just that so to see all the changes, and to leave your much-needed feedback, you can check out the accompanying forum post here: http://forums.faforever.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=14315&p=178296#p178296
