Moderation Announcement Steam

Steam-linking required by Jan 31st

Hello dear FAF Users!

Some of you might be aware that we are currently trying to not share any copyright protected code.

Approximately four months ago, after discussion with sheeo, downlord, and others to verify it was enough time, Visionik (the owner of FAForever) has enforced a deadline for this to be done by the end of this year.

Since this deadline will not be met we will have to enable mandatory steam linking for all users from the 31st of January (up to now only new users had to link their faf account to steam).

The mandatory steam link will stay in place until no copyright protected assets are being distributed.

You will NOT be able to log in to FAForever via the client if your FAF account is not linked to a steam account with Supreme Commander Forged Alliance in the inventory.
You can use your cd key from your retail copy of supreme commander forged alliance to get a free copy of the game on steam or to buy the game while it is on sale – regional prices can be found here.

Should there be any issues with linking your faf account to steam then feel free to post on the tech support sub forum so we can help you out.

Best Regards,
The FAForever Team

Search for new chat/forum moderators

Hello Commanders!

Earlier this year, our FAF moderation councillor posted a nice message for everyone to view. Just for reference to those who are new here, here is the message from February:

Hello FAF community,

The moderator team is actively searching for more members who do not live in a European time zone. If you are interested in joining the moderator team don’t hesitate to apply!

Applicants are expected to send a private message to the IRC Moderator usergroup on the forums detailing on why they think they would make a good addition to the team, which timezone they live in and what sort of commitment they are able to make if they are selected.

As a moderator your are expected to uphold the community rules in both the chat and on the forums. You’ll also be expected to help other users, old and new alike, with questions/problems/etc. This does not mean however that you are to become #aeolus’ go to tech support guru but simply to help where you can. If you already do this then so much the better of course. Another aspect of your tasks will include processing reports which may involve watching replays to look for exploit abuse among other things. You are expected to behave in such a way as to set an example for the community when it comes to the rules.

Well, there’s good news! We’re still searching! And better yet, we have some awesome ban hammers available to complete your official moderation starter kit for just $5.99.

If you would like to apply for a moderator position and receive a complementary 30% off coupon for your moderation starter kit, please follow the rules in the old message above to complete your application form.

Unauthorised lobby scripts

Hello FAF community,

Today we are bringing up an unpleasant topic. Unfortunately a script has been published with which a player can manipulate the FA lobby into displaying incorrect values (rating, games and so on …). While they cannot change their rating, they can pretend it is higher or lower than it should be. We want to bring this to your attention as use of this has become more common and you deserve to know what is going on. All players who are using this script will be banned without warning (all accounts). We had to ban over 50 accounts, mostly smurfs of the same people, during the last weeks. That is why you shouldn’t fear to report these players. You can do this by using the moderator report form (top of #aeolus).

We want fair and balanced games. That’s why we are talking to all of you and encourage you to report people using above mentioned scripts.

Your moderation team.

Cloudflare Security Incident: Reset your passwords

Hello FAF,

some of you may have heard of the Cloudflare Security incident.

Cloudflare is a popular internet support company, mainly offering CDN and DDoS Protection services.

Forged Alliance Forever has been using Cloudflare to protect our and reduce the amount of web traffic.

For about four months, Cloudflare had a bug in several of its features that allowed random memory contents of their webproxies to be sent out with website requests. These random memory contents contained parts of other websites’ traffic, including secret data such as private messages and passwords.

This errant data was picked up by search engine crawlers and other archives. Search engine providers are now trying to clean up their caches, but all data that has been leaked must be considered compromised.

This means the data of FAF users on the forum, including passwords, has potentially been compromised.

Therefore, we urge you to change your FAF forum password and if you have reused that password anywhere, pick a new password there too.

This incident affects not just FAF, but a huge amount of websites, including many very popular ones. You should expect to get notifications from many websites in the next days.

We recommend that you

  • Do not reuse any passwords on different websites
  • Choose strong, preferably randomly generated passwords
  • Use a password manager
  • Use 2-Factor authentication on any important websites

Thank you.

You can find more information on the incident here:
