Moderation Announcement Steam

Steam-linking required by Jan 31st

Hello dear FAF Users!

Some of you might be aware that we are currently trying to not share any copyright protected code.

Approximately four months ago, after discussion with sheeo, downlord, and others to verify it was enough time, Visionik (the owner of FAForever) has enforced a deadline for this to be done by the end of this year.

Since this deadline will not be met we will have to enable mandatory steam linking for all users from the 31st of January (up to now only new users had to link their faf account to steam).

The mandatory steam link will stay in place until no copyright protected assets are being distributed.

You will NOT be able to log in to FAForever via the client if your FAF account is not linked to a steam account with Supreme Commander Forged Alliance in the inventory.
You can use your cd key from your retail copy of supreme commander forged alliance to get a free copy of the game on steam or to buy the game while it is on sale – regional prices can be found here.

Should there be any issues with linking your faf account to steam then feel free to post on the tech support sub forum so we can help you out.

Best Regards,
The FAForever Team

Server Update Steam

Enforcing Steam-Link for all new accounts

When we activated the one-account-per-machine mechanism with the server update last week, we were aware that it is easy to circumvent for dedicated villains. Yet, we gave it a try before taking more drastic measures.

Unfortunately, as expected, people are circumventing it and continue their malicious behavior. As they can easily create new accounts once we ban them, we’re basically unable to ban such people.

Therefore, at the expense of FAF’s openness for new players, we decided to force Steam-Link for all accounts created after 2018-09-15 12:00 UTC.

This means that new users are required to:

  • Have a Steam account
  • Have Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance in their game library
  • Go through FAF’s Link Account to Steam process

Otherwise, they won’t be able to log in.

It really hurts me to enable this as it is going to be a big hurdle for anyone who wants to join FAF or bring their friends over. But unfortunately, this step seems necessary for now.

We will continue to improve the one-account-per-machine system and try to work out other options (like mobile phone validation) but since our resources are rather limited, it will likely take quite a while until we are ready to remove the Steam-Link restriction.

Thank you for your understanding,

Steam OpenId – Account linker.

Steam logo. For now, Forged Alliance Account were tied to computers. It was not possible to create or log in a second account on a single computer.

This protection is there to reduce the amount of smurfs.

Smurfing is utilizing an account with a lower ranking than usual to beat up on lesser players.

It is now possible to use an additional method to ‘validate’ your account, using your Steam Id.

It will tie your FAF account to your steam Id, using steam openid authentication ( Using that, your Steam login and password will be never asked and/or linked to the database.

Only your steam Id will be used ( It only allow the access to your Steam public profile, as well as your list of owned game.
FAF only check the presence of Forged Alliance in that list once, and doesn’t save any game or public profile information in the database.

Doing this allow:

  • Playing on a Virtual Machine.
  • Logging several accounts on the same computer.
  • Go freely on any other computer.

  • When a FAF account linked to Steam is used on a computer, all the accounts used on that computer must use a linked profile too. Ask the owner of the computer before logging in with your linked account!
  • You can only tie one FAF account to a single Steam account.
  • There is no coming back. Once your account is linked, it’s not possible to un-link it. (that option may or may not be possible in the future).
